All the children came home with shamrock after a special P2 St Patrick’s Day celebration Assembly on Wednesday this week. Also we were visited for the very first time from the priest of St Mary’s on the Hill Parish, Father John Forsythe on Tuesday too. We presented Father John with shamrock and he led the service of 1st Penance (Confession) on Wednesday for our P3 children in St Mary’s on the Hill.
Here’s what one of our parents had to say about the day…..
“I didn’t get a chance to speak to you on Wednesday but my husband and I both wanted to say thank you for all the work you (and other staff!) have done in preparing the children for their 1st Confession. The junior choir sang beautifully and all were so well turned out in their shirts and ties and so well behaved they did us proud! It was lovely that the children got a wee certificate to remember the day and also a lovely touch to have tea/juice and biscuits back in the school afterwards!“

On Sunday 4th March 12 at 8pm, the school senior choir took to the stage once again in support of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, at the fabulous Peace Proms 2012, which took place at the Ulster Hall in Belfast. We are holding our own special Glengormley Balloon Release as the finale of our Integrated Week 2012. On Friday 9th March 2012 at 1130, we will launch 300 colourful balloons into the sky above Glengormley to mark 30 years of Integrated Education in Northern Ireland. We hope that anyone that finds one of our balloons will detach the card on it and contact our school by phone or email to let us know how far and where it has ended up. If we get a good prevailing wind (which we can in the micro-climate of the shadow of the Cavehill as anyone who lives in Glengormley knows!) who knows how far they might go and where they will end up. The children are looking forward to charting the balloon journeys. Please do come along and join us in the playground at 1130 on Friday 9th March 2012 and watch the children ably assisted by a special guest release our balloons.
The Twinning of the Glens.
The little people from the Glens of Gormley and the Glens of Ann are working together on a literacy project this TITANIC anniversary year, 2012. Watch out for some fabulous creative writing. This is just a little bit to wet your appetite and get the children motivated!
Twinning of the Glens
This week, children from Primary 6 were visited by Susie Miller, a well known local author of such novels as “The 2 Pennies”. Susie is an active member of the Titanic Society and has personal and professional links with the great ship. She helped the children in a workshop, see how writers can meld fact and fiction together in a literary work. The programme was sponsored through funds secured by school, along with Glenann Primary School in Cushendall, from the Government’s Community Relations, Equality and Diversity Northern Ireland Policy. We hope to continue with learning opportunities throughout this academic year, including a residential visit to the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh, to continue the studies of Titanic in this the 2012 100th Anniversary year of the tragic sinking.
The Mayor of Newtownabbey Borough Council hosted the School Council today at Mossley Mill. The pupil council first held their January council meeting in the Newtownabbey Council Chambers, where the Mayor presented our Chairperson with a presentation gaval for bringing our meetings to order. All the pupil councillors who represent their P5 – P7 classes and the school as a whole went through their minutes, matters arising and agenda but in the special surroundings of the Council Chambers this time. The Mayor, Alderman Billy Webb then very kindly treated Mr Arnold, Mrs McCann and the pupil council members to a lunch in his parlour. All the pupils had a wonderful learning experience and loved their lunchtime visit to Mossley Mill.
