Pupils from P4 and P5 worked hard to a tight deadline to complete a collage mural as part of a local schools’ celebration of the opening of our newest Tesco store at the New Sandyknowes Shopping Centre (former Northcott site). The store will be officially open on Monday 28th November 2011 when you can call down and see the artwork for yourselves. Hopefully the children will get a visit too. The children were asked to present a theme of France and they were assisted by Mrs Arnold, who is a very talented artist.
Pupils at Glengormley Integrated Primary School were glad to show off their new laptops when Baroness May Blood MBE visited the school’s IT suite.
The equipment was bought thanks to a donation from the Australian Ireland Fund, after the charity’s Executive Director, Teresa Keating, toured the school last summer on a trip organised by the Integrated Education Fund.
Baroness Blood congratulated everyone at Glengormley IPS for its work in education children of all backgrounds and cultures together since it transformed to integrated status in 2003. After admiring the new computer equipment the visitor was treated to music from the children and lunch with the staff.
Glengormley IPS Principal Nigel Arnold says
“We were all delighted to welcome Baroness Blood to the school as we feel we have so much to celebrate in the work that we do here, both in school and in sharing with other schools. When our visitor from Australia, Teresa Keating, saw our children learning and playing together earlier this year she wanted to support our growth as an integrated school and we are very grateful for the Australian Ireland Fund’s support for our new computer facility.”

On 16 Novembe 2011, Mrs McCann and her P6 class were invited to W5 for a free trip as part of the prize for being shortlisted down to the last 6 teachers and classes (out of over 600) in the Eco-School Awards 2011 sponsored by the Co-Operative.
Together they finished a final 4th place, which we are all really proud of. They got to meet the Lord Mayor of Belfast and had their picture taken with him, so keep an eye out in the Belfast Telegraph soon…. Well done to Mrs McC and all of P6 for representing our school and doing so very well! Keep up the good Eco-examples to us all!
GIPS pupils had a visit from 2 very special guests on Monday 14th Nov 11 care of Royal Mail sorting office at Mallusk. BBC NI followed their escapades as they travelled around some local schools collecting copper coins from the children of the area. Footage of this trip can be seen on Saturday evening (19th November 2011) from 5.45pm to 7pm when a special local programme of the events throughout the week to support Children in Need is broadcast. Remember to set your Sky+!
On Tuesday 15th November 2011 pupils of P6 and P7 had 2 special visits. First, in the morning, following a workshop based on young enterprise and business in the community, staff of Newtownabbey Borough Council and pupils were visited by the current Mayor of Newtownabbey, Alderman Billy Webb. Then later in the day, they got a visit and healthy lifestyle workshop from Gordie Cameron & James Hutchinson (who plays in defence for the team) of the Belfast Giants Ice Hockey team.
Here are some photographs from the day.
This week, our good friends from P6 and P7 at Glenann PS in Cushendall, joined our P6 pupils in Mrs McCann’s class for the first time this year, to participate in a Flight workshop, led by Tony Monaghan from Bombardier. Once again Tony and his team of young apprentices are supporting our children from both schools on a series of Flight related experiences and workshops. The next one to look forward to is later this term in W5 at the Odyssey! We’re having such fun learning this way with our friends from Glenann.
