School Pupil Council 2011-12

Welcome to our new School pupils’ Council.  These children were elected by their peers in their classes last term in 2010-11 following an election campaign and release of their manifestos.  They will hold their seats on the school council for the duration of this academic year.  Thanks to Mrs McCann for engineering the process.  We look forward to the Chairperson leading her Council and being the voice of the pupils in the school.  The Council meet at lunchtime once each month to discuss matters on their agenda.  Subsequent actions are then delegated out or sent on to Board of Governors, Teaching Staff or the Senior Management for further consideration.

ETI Follow-up Inspection Report ~ June 2011

Following a visit from the Education and Training Inspectorate in June 2011, we have received this follow-up report, now completing the formal process of Inspection since April 2009.  Thanks to all staff and pupils who worked so hard throughout this period on the Areas for Improvement indentified by the ETI in 2009.  We are now a school that has adapted effectively to the process of self-evaluation and the ETI are confident that we can continue to address areas for improvement ourselves as part of an ongoing School Development Planning process.

A Special Visitor from Down Under

Teresa Keating, Executive Director of the Australian Ireland Fund began her afternoon in Belfast with a tour of Forge IPS where she met children of all ages and joined in maths games as well as being entertained with a song.  She heard that Forge is celebrating its 25th birthday, and learnt something of the history of the school set up by parents in South Belfast.
Teresa then travelled to Glengormley IPS, a school more than 75 years old and which transformed to integrated status in 2003. Children here were eager to talk to Teresa about her life in Australia but also chatted about how so many different background and cultures are represented at their school.
The Ireland Funds have been proud supporters of integrated education for more than 25 years, believing integrated schools have a vital role to play in building a shared future for Northern Ireland.  Support from The Ireland Funds has built and improved school facilities, purchased much-needed equipment and developed the range and quality of services available to pupils. Lady Mary Fairfax, of the Fairfax Group publishing empire, is a leading supporter of the Australian Ireland Fund and for a number of years has hosted a benefit party in the garden of her home overlooking Sydney Harbour.
The Sir Warwick Fairfax Trust and the Australian Ireland Fund have supported a host of integrated schools, including Blackwater IC, Ballycastle IPS, Fort Hill IPS, Drumlins IPS and Rowandale IPS.

Colin Bateman visits Glengormley IPS

Pupils from P6 and P7 were delighted to experience a very special visitor today in the form of the world famous author Colin Bateman, known for his novels such as Divorcing Jack, Mystery Man and his hit TV series Murphy’s Law.  Colin spend time discussing with children his career history and what inspired him to become a writer as well as the difficulties he endured along the way.  He then read a chapter from his latest novel for children, “Reservoir Pups” which he also had copies of specially signed for the children.  Colin was also kind enough to pose for the local press photographer so expect to see an article in the NT and he even signed copies of parents’ and staff adult novels of his, that were sent in for signing.
We would like to thank his for his time and effort to come and inspire some of our pupils here in P6 and P7 about success in writing.
Here are a few of our own photos from the visit.

The NEW Partnership – IEF PACT3 Project 2008-11 VIDEO CASE STUDY

Here is a video short of some of the great moments which have been made possible due to the additional funding generously contributed to our 3 schools over the last 3 years.  GIPS are now strong friends and partners with their sister schools, St Terese NS, Poleglass and Glenann PS, Cushendall.

As this project draws to a close this year, we hope that the friendships and opportunities continue.  Where there’s a will, there’s a way…….
