This week, children from Primary 6 were visited by Susie Miller, a well known local author of such novels as “The 2 Pennies”. Susie is an active member of the Titanic Society and has personal and professional links with the great ship. She helped the children in a workshop, see how writers can meld fact and fiction together in a literary work. The programme was sponsored through funds secured by school, along with Glenann Primary School in Cushendall, from the Government’s Community Relations, Equality and Diversity Northern Ireland Policy. We hope to continue with learning opportunities throughout this academic year, including a residential visit to the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh, to continue the studies of Titanic in this the 2012 100th Anniversary year of the tragic sinking.
Glengormley Integrated Primary School visited W5 this week as part of Northern Bank Science Counts, an exciting education partnership with W5, Northern Ireland’s award winning interactive discovery centre. The award-winning programme offers a rich educational experience for primary school pupils, focusing on engaging them with science and maths. To date, 210 schools and nearly 16,000 children have participated in the programme with rave reviews from pupils and teachers alike.
The pupils from Glengormley Integrated Primary School were treated to a Maths Problem Solvers Challenge by the educational team from W5 followed by an exploration of W5’s 250 hands-on exhibits.
Dr Sally Montgomery, Chief Executive of W5 explained, “Northern Bank Science Counts works really well for Key Stage 2 pupils. Using Maths is a key part of preparing for life and work and we need to use it in flexible ways, so that pupils get a chance to solve problems, make decisions and use maths in a practical way.”
Vanessa Postle, External Relations Manager, Northern Bank added, “Northern Bank Science Counts allows young learners to make the link between education and work. We think it is important for pupils to see how relevant maths and science are to the wider environment and their future employment. It is one of a number of Northern Bank’s community initiatives which make learning fun and straightforward.”
The Mayor of Newtownabbey Borough Council hosted the School Council today at Mossley Mill. The pupil council first held their January council meeting in the Newtownabbey Council Chambers, where the Mayor presented our Chairperson with a presentation gaval for bringing our meetings to order. All the pupil councillors who represent their P5 – P7 classes and the school as a whole went through their minutes, matters arising and agenda but in the special surroundings of the Council Chambers this time. The Mayor, Alderman Billy Webb then very kindly treated Mr Arnold, Mrs McCann and the pupil council members to a lunch in his parlour. All the pupils had a wonderful learning experience and loved their lunchtime visit to Mossley Mill.
